adobe harp
Materials: Adobe mold made of wood & screws, + fishing line, tuning pegs, & wind. Year: 2025
This is an aeolian harp made from an adobe mold that my dad and I built 7 years ago.
I became fascinated with wind harps early this year and made this on a whim. After a hard day this Winter, Sam and I drove out to Mt. Tam and carried the harp up a hill. With wind conditions and expectations low, we were greeted by a ladybug on a rock and we posted up. We sat and waited, watching the sun slowly fall over the ocean. With fog coasting in the distance, we suddenly began to hear it: Faint, crystal-like vibrations were blooming from the air - It was magic.
See, If you take the adobe harp outside and the conditions are just right, the air will rush through the strings made of fishing line, and ever so gently harmonic hums whisper to say: the wind is singing.
And yet, recording the sound of the harp has proven to be elusive - kinda like trying to document a ufo. For me, words often fall short at describing the experience. I can say the first time I heard it, the hair on my arms stood up and my eyes filled with tears. Its gentle song had me thinking of patience and hope. I didn’t quite know what to say at the time, though we knew something special was happening.
Here, on the adobe harp, there is a union of wind, sound, and land, and I’m inspired by the song they’re singing together.
I’m excited to keep experimenting with this instrument, seeing and listening to how it lives in the world and in the wind. More soon - Happy Spring 🌬️
